Description
From the sellerWajima-nuri Seigaiha Maru Kōgō by Chahira Issai. This gorgeous lacquer kōgō features a subtle motif of 'seigaiha' 青海波 'Ocean Waves". Also pronounced 'seikaiha.' Seigaiha design is made of wave arches of concentric circles superimposed upon one another so that only the upper portion of each set of circles is visible. It was used in ancient China to depict the sea on maps. In Japan it was known before the Heian period (794-1185) and is seen on many different items such as textiles, ceramics and lacquerware. Chahira Issai 茶平 一斎 is a 3rd generation famous Makie artist living in Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture. His works have been highly evaluated in the market. Comes in original kiribako (wood box).
