Irwin didnot invent the solid‑center auger bit — that credit goes toGeorge Shetter of York, Pennsylvania, who patented the concept in 1829 and improved it in 1831. Thesolid‑center auger bit is a wood‑boring bit with a thick, continuous central shaft (“solid center”) that gives the bit greater strength, rigidity, and resistance to bending compared to hollow‑center or double‑twist augers.
