Description
From the sellerRikyū Koji 利休居士像 遺偈 by Murasakino Kōtō Gōzan (松長剛山 Matsunaga Gōzan, chief abbot of Kōtō-in, Daitokuji). This is a portrait of Rikyū with (the Chinese part of) his death poem. For the tragic occasion Rikyū’s composed a “departing this world” poem (jisei no ku), also sometimes referred to as a “bequeathed Buddhist verse” (yuige), the term used for the death poem of a monk, which in this case comprises four lines of four-character Chinese verse and a 31-syllable Japanese waka poem. Size: L.68 1/2" x W.14 1/4" Condition: Excellent, like new. Wood box with hakogaki and outer paper box.
