Description

From the seller
…… This auction is for a very rare, original 1835, Second Edition of Memoir and Poems of Phillis Wheatley, A Native African and a Slave, which was ublished in Boston by Light & Horton. Phillis Wheatley (c.1753–1784) is recognized as the first African American to publish a book of poetry and one of the most important literary figures of Colonial America. …Written by Margaret Matilda Odell, this small 4" by 6" book contains an influential biography of Wheatley, along with her collected poems, and retains the engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. Kidnapped from West Africa as a child and enslaved in Boston, Wheatley gained international fame after the publication of her landmark 1773 volume “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral,” becoming one of the most celebrated Black writers of the eighteenth century.
