Signed 19thC Meiji Period Japanese Silk Embroidery Nihon Shishu Temple Tapestry

…… This auction is for a large and very rare 19th century Nihon Shishu (Japanese Embroidery). This type of intricate Japanese textile was often created for export. Many of these were produced in Kyoto during the late 19th-century Meiji era (1868–1912), which was the "golden age" for silk embroidery. …… This Large Antique Shishu is hand-embroidered with a traditional Japanese landscape scene. In the center is a Torii, or a “Secret Portal” arch, leading to the temples, with a sign containing Japanese characters hanging from the center. It also depicts a small bridge with trees, buildings, houses, and more temples. This Meiji-era Silk Embroidery is in good, clean condition; however, there is some damage to the edges of the borders, as well as some separations where the black silk is hand-sewn to the borders.
