Sphalerite is a sulfide mineral composed primarily of zinc sulfide (ZnS) and is the principal ore of zinc. Typical physical properties include a Mohs hardness of about 3.5–4, perfect dodecahedral cleavage, a light brown to yellow streak, and a relatively high specific gravity (around 3.9–4.1).
