Pair 19th Century Carved Oak Dogs Folk Art Carving

Fun pair of carved oak pups, late 19th century, not sure of the original application, one bears a hand-applied “88” in black ink/paint. Model number or year created, perhaps? Dry, untouched condition with a few small splotches of what looks like white paint. Whatever the case, they make a good pair, would look lovely on a mantle as they stand firmly and straight. They are both approximately 6 1/4” from tip of snout to their tails.
