In 1948, the NYC began to build hundreds of new bay window cabooses. These were intended to replace the aging fleet of wood cabooses that had been used since the late 1800s. Although the wood cabooses survived into the 1970s, these steel bay window cabooses supplanted the wood cabooses on mainline freight trains until the Conrail days of the 1980s.
