By request of Paul Robeson, the original N-Word lyrics were changed to "Darkies". From the 1936 film "The Showboat", with the lyrics modified by Robeson "Darkies". A Paul Robeson– Ol' Man River. Carl Laemmle, head of Universal, had been deeply dissatisfied with that film, and wanted to make an all-sound version of the musical.
