When this movie was being cast, Margaret Sullavan had recently achieved leading lady status, and when the prospective male lead became unavailable, she insisted that James Stewart, who had had only small or supporting roles be cast opposite her. It turned out well, both for Stewart’s career and for the movie itself, which got favorable reviews. The pair went on to make three more movies together, including The Shop Around the Corner, the precursor to the musical She Loves Me and the AOL movie, You’ve Got Mail, decades later. The herald itself is in rough shape, with a tear extending through much of the crease in the center. It will take some care to preserve and display it. Still, this is a notable marker at the beginning of the career of one of Hollywood’s greats.
