Zharov studied under noted director Theodore Komisarjevsky and made his screen debut in Yakov Protazanov's Aelita (1924), going on to a career spanning over six decades. In his later career he found renewed popularity playing the folksy village policeman Aniskin in a beloved trilogy of films he also directed.
