Much of the coastal area was marshland or bay that has been filled in, to create port facilities. This map features all of that on one side, and shows the old East Bay shoreline (from Vallejo to San Jose) on the other side (from the Oakland Museum, 1993); and an excellent little foldout map & guide to the Sausal Creek Watershed, which drains the middle part of Oakland, from way up in the hills, down to the flatlands and into the Oakland Estuary, around Fruitvale & Jingletown (from Friends of Sausal Creek, circa 2010).
