Description

From the seller
This is a vintage Japanese Nanbu ironware cast iron tea kettle, also known as a tetsubin. Tetsubin are traditionally used for boiling water for making tea and are highly regarded for their durability and excellent heat retention. They are known to impart a gentle quality to water by releasing iron elements, which some believe enhances the taste of tea or coffee and provides a natural iron supplement. Authentic tetsubin, like the one pictured with its a bamboo-motif design, are often handcrafted by skilled artisans in the Iwate region of Japan, where this craft has a history spanning over 400 years. Unlike enamel-coated teapots used only for steeping, a tetsubin is a kettle designed to be placed directly on a heat source
