Italy Roman Republican Alliance 5 Franchi Banknote ca 1849 XF/AU This is a VERY SCARCE HIGHER GRADE EARLY 19th Century Banknote from the Roman Republic Alliance in Italy. This Italian Bank Note was issued by the Comitato Nazionale and signed by Giuseppe Mazzini, a Revolutionary for 5 Franchi circa 1849. The Note features a Vignette of Rifles and Cannon Balls on the obverse. This Banknote was a Fund Raising Note intended to finance his insurrection in Italy and Europe. It was Payable by the First Republic that was to be established in Europe. Mazzini, an Italian nationalist, was a fervent advocate of Republicanism and envisioned a united, free and independent Italy. He helped define the modern European movement in the mid 19th Century for popular democracy in a republican state. Mazzini joined a number of insurrections.
