From the seller“The Canoe Convention”. The Winning Boat: A scene at the top showing a canoe race finish line. Matches were often played indoors with one-handed sticks and a ball or rubber puck. The publication date of 1883 suggests these illustrations may be related to the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait, which occurred in August of that year and caused massive tsunamis and regional destruction.
