The counterstamping was so widespread that collectors make date sets, based on the date of the host coin. This one is counterstamped of the 25 centavos of 1893 (KM 130). For Costa Rica, this resulted in the devaluation of their currency, the change from 90% silver coins to those with 50% silver (or no silver at all), and the counterstamping of most of their coinage to double the face value of the old coins.
