The tradition began all the way back in 1634 as a vow to God to protect the village from the devastating bubonic plague. Anton Lang lived from 1875 to 1938 and was a local German studio potter who achieved massive international celebrity status when he was selected to play the lead role of Jesus Christ across three separate decades, performing the role in 1900, 1910, and 1922.
