Description
From the sellerUp for auction is an ultra rare hand forged Tillinghast Hewing axe. It has been documented that Tillinghast Iron Works, Toledo, Ohio was only in operation for one year, from 1865-1866 and manufactured a variety of tools. After a great deal of research, I contacted three auction houses, Martin Donnelly Auctions, Brown Tool Auctions and Jim Bode. It has been determined that there is no record of any other hand ax that has been recorded for sale at auction by this maker, making this a rare, one of a kind find. The cast iron head has a 6 3/4” cutting edge. The axe head is marked (Tillinghast Warranted Cast Iron). The original crooked hickory handle is 18” in length. The height of the axe head is 8 1/2”. This is possibly the only axe in existence by this maker.
