Dr. Christian Kennert Collection, Potsdam, Germany. The masks of the Marka (a Mande subgroup) originated in the landlocked country of Mali, West Africa. Marka masks, used for their rituals related to fishing or farming, are covered with plaques of copper or brass (alloy of copper and zinc).
