Description

From the seller
This is a well-known one — a Hard Times Token, HT-70 ("I Take the Responsibility" / "Roman Firmness"), struck around 1834 by Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut, in copper. It's political satire aimed at Andrew Jackson: the obverse shows Jackson popping out of a chest holding a money bag and a sword, with the legend "I TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY," while the reverse shows a donkey labeled "LLD" with the legend "THE CONSTITUTION AS I UNDERSTAND IT," "ROMAN FIRMNESS," and "VETO." "I take the responsibility" references Jackson's move to place Bank of the United States funds into state banks, while the donkey mocks the honorary law degree Harvard gave him.
