17th/18thC Antique French Augsburg Universal Equinoctial Pocket Sundial Compass

…… The back of this early, anttique Pocket Sundial is hand engraved “Eleva Pol. Augsburg Paris 48 Cracan 50 Shadefegr.” After searching online we learned this 2 1/4” diameter Octagon Pocket Sundial is from the late 17th Century or very early 18th Century and is quite rare. We were able to find a few examples online but none marked exactly like this one or with its original brass case. As you can see this example is in excellent original condition because it has been protected all these years in its original velvet lined octagon case. (last photographs) All the brass is hand engraved with numbers, roman numerals as well as designs and under the original 1 1/4” glass lens the face is also engraved and silverplated. ...
