Raytheon's idea was mating the off-the-shelf Dutch PRTL variant of the Gepard turret to the M48 chassis. Of the lead contenders in the competition, General Dynamics' entry mated the 35mm cannons identical to the Gepard's to the proven US Navy Phalanx CIWS' sensors, and Ford's entry matched a pair of Bofors 40mm cannons to the air intercept radar of a F-16 Falcon fighter jet.
